Background[]

On January 28, 2013, Azealia Banks revealed that "Yung Rapunxel" will be the lead single from Broke with Expensive Taste.[1] The song was supposed to be released on February 12, but was pushed for March 26. Later the song got delayed for April 16, 2013. The song was finally released on March 11, 2013 on Azealia's SoundCloud account.[2]

Reception[]

"Yung Rapunxel" has received favourable reviews from critics, with many noting a significant departure from Banks' previous work. Spin Magazine's Marc Hogan wrote that the song "comes across as a reinvention for her, though it doesn't have quite that track's instantly memorable catchphrases... [That] Finally, Banks has left seapunk behind to go where she belonged all along: another galaxy". MTV's Michael Depland believed that on the track, "A bona fide hip-house banger , Azealia rhymes slickly (and NSFW-ly) over a busy witch-hop beat", that Banks is "back spitting fire over a manic '90s HI-NRG-influenced track, which is cut in between muffled hollers".

Music video[]

The music video for the song was shot on February 22, 2013.[3] It is directed by Jam Sutton.[4][5] It premiered on April 16, 2013.
